Inaugural Flora Aasen Memorial Alzheimer
Pro-Am
a Huge Success
Inside Golf / Fall 2000
Late in August, the University Golf Club
played host to the inaugural Flora Aasen Memorial Alzheimer Pro-Am. Lower
Mainland golfers will be familiar with the Aasen name through Flora's son,
John, who has been Director of Teaching at University Golf Club for the past 11 years.
With John's contacts in the pro golf
community, they were able to attract a good number of pros from
around the province.
During the
cocktail hour, Brad Ewart, host of
TV's "The Golf
Show", put on a show displaying the trick shot expertise that had him traveling the world during his professional playing days. |

America West Airlines gave two trips for
auction while Carter GM sponsored the hole-in-one prizes plus was a
platinum sponsor. In all over $10,000 in amateur prizes were available.
The tournament was followed by steak and
salmon BBQ, reception and live auction.
One of the high points of the
evening definitely was the musical stylings of Warren Stanyer, golf
columnist, University Golf Club member and professional singer.
Overall, the event raised over $50,000 and
on behalf of the Alzheimer
Society, Rose-Marie Goodwin spoke glowingly of
the Aasens' efforts in supporting their mandate, "The Alzheimer
Society is proud to be the recipient of the proceeds of this tournament.
It will be an annual tribute in support of all people affected by this
deadly disease. The society is overwhelmed by its success in the first
year. We look forward to working with this family for years to come to
honour Flora's life."
